Presenters: Tara Brent, Virginia Tech University Cooperative Extension; Wendy Herdman, Virginia Tech University Cooperative Extension
Session Abstract: PYD research shows that opportunities that build protective factors and increase connections help youth thrive and contribute positively. This session will highlight a 4-H camp teen leader training program with a simple goal: Camp is for the Campers. Attendees will engage in intentional lessons that prepare teens to provide a positive youth development experience at camp for youth. Learn strategies to intentionally build protective factors into training to prepare leaders and build assets for their future success. Session Two Title: Guiding Cooperation at Camp

Our strategies help achieve connection, cooperation, and calm. Equipped with a new way to understand challenging behaviors, participants will increase their skills in developmental relationships and belonging to guide cooperation for the entire camp.
Session Three Title: Positive Youth Development Through a Trauma Informed Lens: 4-H Residential Camp Staff Training
Presenters: Sarah Hensley, University of Florida
Session Abstract: Residential summer camps offer an immersive opportunity for young people to experience a context rich experience. Camp is known as fun and stimulating but can also be overwhelming to youth. Camp staff are on the front line when it comes to providing a high-quality experience. Given the overwhelming frequency of youth who have endured Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) or other trauma, staff must be trained to intentionally offer programs through a trauma informed lens. This hands-on session will share how one state, trained camp staff in PYD principles through a trauma informed lens.
Session Four Title: Ohio 4-H’s Camping Curriculum Will Help You Thrive!
Presenters: Jamie McConnell, Ohio State University; Hannah Epley, Ohio State University; Frances Foos, Ohio State University; Lindsey Van Gundy, Ohio State University

The Ohio 4-H Camping Curriculum provides professionals with the necessary background knowledge to train counselors, as well as plan and evaluate programs. The curriculum features a menu of grab and go options, while ensuring professionals are aware of state 4-H camping policies and procedures. Lesson plans are based on the Ohio 4-H Camp Counselor Competency Model. Evaluation results indicate the curriculum is easy to use, functional and adaptable. This session will share the camping curriculum package, replication requirements, and how the curriculum may be acquired.
